Yet Here I Am

Yet Here I Am

by Deborah Binner

Deborah Binner suffered the unimaginable pain of losing her precious daughter Chloe to bone cancer when she was just 18 years old. Still blinded by grief, just 18 months later, she received the devastating blow that her beloved husband Simon had Motor Neurone Disease. Simon refused to allow the disease to take him and instead opted for an assisted death in a Swiss clinic, leaving Deborah bereaved once more.

Yet Here I Am is a deeply personal account of life after so much loss. Deborah charts her journey from suicidal despair, through anger and isolation, to learning to live again in a new and different way. Her gnawing grief seeps out of every page, as she tries to navigate some kind of purposeful life and refuses to let the past destroy anything else that is beautiful and good.

In a heartbreaking account of her daughter Chloe’s illness and death just two weeks after her 18th birthday, she captures the never ending darkness and permeating loss of so many years ahead and of so much potential.

And with remarkable candor, Deborah describes the “surreal” experience of attending the assisted dying clinic in Switzerland with her husband as he ended his life with the press of a button. She recalls the making of the BAFTA-nominated BBC film How to Die: Simon’s Choice which covered the last six months of Simon’s life.

Yet through utter determination, love of family and friends, and a ruthless adherence to self-care, she has risen again to build a new kind of life. She has learned that survival rests on staying open to love and new experiences and refusing to fall into the lure of despair and self-pity. She has crafted her own survival tips and continues to push forward with dignity, humility and a quest to find real meaning in her life.

Ultimately this is a book about the resilience of the human spirit and a demonstration of how one can still live well, if one chooses to, in any given circumstances.
